If you were ever to have left over coals in your burning pit outside they can send out smoke trails. These trails can lead to some nasty damage to everything it attaches itself to. You do not want to find yourself standing in the middle of these smoke trails as they can make you pass out depending on how heavy the smoke in this trail is. Even the light trails can send you into a coughing attack and make your eyes burn and water. If you stand in any of them too long, the damage to your lungs might be permanent.

If you have to be around any of these coals and someone tells you it is time to put them out stop for a minute and look at the direction the trail is going. Then you can go the other way to attack it from the other direction. This way you will avoid getting attacked by any of this smoke and you can put them out without running into any problems. Always have someone there to help you just in case something should happen because if something should and you are alone it might be dangerous. You really never know what is in these coals as everything in this pit will burn. They will all send different toxins in the air that can cause real damage.

You will want to make sure that you have good and high enough walls on this pit so that none of it can spread to other areas. Have a water hose close by just in case it does and it might not be a bad idea to have a pitch fork and shovel near by also. Putting loose dirt in them will put them out really fast as you are cutting off its air supply. If the smoke gets too heavy, it can get into your tear ducts causing them to become red, swollen and irritated. When this happens you will have to wash out your eyes and then perhaps go to your doctor for help.

There are probably not that many occasions these days when you will have the need to burn trash of some kind outdoors in a pit. There are however, people that live in really rural areas that still do it on a regular basis because they live so far out from a nearby dump facility and have no trash pick-up. It is always important to be careful because of the dangers of being exposed to anything toxic in the smoke. There is always also the risk of starting a wildfire that could be deadly to many things. Always be prepared to get the fire out if it gets out of control.
